Please note that the City required us to plant something along the retaining wall on the front walk, to help prevent access directly to that wall. There will be 27 Pfitzers plants in that area. Many were planted yesterday, with the remaining balance being put into the ground today. In addition, I thought you might appreciate a couple of pictures of the stadium being leveled which started this week. Interesting to note, that one year ago.... we were erecting concrete forms for the basement walls of 940....Many things have happened since.

04/11/2002 From an '83 Alumni

Bill, I just had a chance to visit the PSK website and needless to say I'm very, very impressed and humbled at all that has been accomplished over the last couple of years! I'm embarrassed to say I haven't been able to keep up with the successes of PSK and most importantly the new house project!

Currently I'm the commander of 2d Battalion 327th Infantry with the 101st Airborne Division, as you can imagine, we have been a little busy lately. I will drop you a pledge ASAP, forgive my timeliness! Bill, thank you for all you have done...kudos for all you guys who have worked so hard to keep our home, our heritage, and our dream of brotherhood alive in Maryville MO.

Three days ago I met with Senator Ike Skelton from Missouri...needless to say he was shocked when I told him my under graduate was from NWMSU! Well between us brothers, I may have gotten my diploma from NWMSU, but I got my degree from Phi Sigma Kappa.

God Bless all of you,

very respectfully

04/03/2002 From The Phi Sig Alumni Board

Dear Brothers:
A great deal has been accomplished at 940 College Avenue during the last two years.

The most recent news includes:

* Donations to the Phi Sigma Scholarship Association are TAX DEDUCTIBLE!!!
The IRS has approved the Scholarship Association as a 501(c)(3) Corporation.  We know that many of you have been waiting for this news to make a commitment.  Now you can make that commitment and have 100% of your donations tax deductible.  Remember to see if your employer offers to match donations that you make to charitable organizations.

* The construction of the New Phi Sig House at 940 College Avenue is complete.
This includes tearing down the old house, loan payoff on the old house, construction of a 12,000+ sq. ft. all brick exterior house, furniture for entire house, window coverings, and landscaping.  We have a tremendous value for the amount of money that we invested.  Actives moved into the house on March 1, 2002, and have reestablished 940 College Avenue as the center of the universe.

* The Grand Opening Celebration will be held September 6th and 7th, 2002.
Details of the activities will be mailed out soon and will also be posted here on the website.   Festivities will include:

  • Friday Afternoon - Golf
  • Saturday - Open House
  • Saturday Afternoon - NWMSU vs. UNO
  • Saturday Night - Party At The NWMSU Alumni House

All alumni are encouraged to come to the Grand Opening Celebration.  We don't want anyone to miss this event because they have not made a pledge or donation to the house.  That is not important.  You can make a contribution to the cause by your presence at the Grand Opening.  This house was built to honor all Phi Sig Alumni, so you should be there.  Remember, the house is dry so there will be no alcohol allowed at the house at anytime.

* The Annual Phi Sig Alumni Golf Tournament is Saturday, June 22nd at the Mozingo Golf Course in Maryville.
The first Tee Times will be at 7:30 am.  Cost for this event is $70.00, which includes 18 holes/cart, lunch, beverages, prizes, and brotherhood at it's finest!   This year will also be the first year that the lunch, awards presentation, and alumni meeting will be held at the new house.  Mail entry fees, along with partner name, and tee time preferences to: Adam Courter, 1104 NW Arlington Place, Apt.#8, Blue Springs, Missouri, 64015.  If you have questions you may contact Adam at either   or   or call him at 816-229-4616/816-682-2730.

* The Active Chapter is doing well.
They won the "Most Outstanding Chapter" award from Phi Sig Nationals in 2001.  They also won Homecoming Supremacy in the fall of 2001.  The Legacy and brotherhood that we were a part of, and helped create, is alive and doing well at 940 College Avenue!

We have come a long way in two years.  Two years ago the City of Maryville told us that our old house was not safe to be used as a Fraternity house.  We had to take action to build a new house or close the Fraternity down.  We now have a magnificent new house at 940 College Avenue, but our work is not completed until we raise the required funds.  Please consider making a commitment to help today.

See you at the Grand Opening!!!

The Phi Sig Alumni Board

03/25/2002 From Bill Mackintosh

Gentlemen:
We have just received word that the Phi Sigma Scholarship Association has been approved by our beloved IRS as a Tax exempt Corporation. This means that your donations are tax deductible!!!!!! In fact any donations made since June 7, 2001, are tax deductible!!!!!! I know many of you have not committed to this project until you knew the tax deductibility of your donation. NOW YOU KNOW!! I will be sending out another mailing next week so those that we do not have e-mail addresses for so they will here the news. You could help by making a pledge/donation, increasing the pledge/donation that you have already made, and SPREADING THE WORD. If everyone that is getting this e-mail would call one brother and tell him the news and ask him to be at the grand opening September 6th and 7th, 2002, we could complete this project in a hurry. Please look at the web site for details about the grand opening and a pledge/donation form.

Don't forget that we will now qualify for employer matching donations, if your employer has such a program!!!

Call me if you have any questions, or want to help out.

Bill Mackintosh 402-871-3903

Phi Sig Update

Today an e-mail was sent to the annual chairs involved in fund raising and the house committee. Since the house is finished anyone on the house committee has just been promoted(or demoted) to helping spread the word about funds and participation that is needed by all brothers. Actually everyone on the house committee has been involved from the beginning in spreading the word and we appreciate your continued support!

The house is done. Fund raising is not. 103 men have pledged/donated over $200,000. We need to raise a total of $450,000. We will not do it without your help.

The grand opening of the house will be on Sept. 6 and 7 2002. You need to get a hotel reservation now as there is some sort of festival in Maryville that same weekend. We are forming a board to manage our investment going forward. Jim Eaton will move to immediate past president. Bob Croy will take over as President and Mike Kelly will be VP. We will have a slate of officers all to be approved at the meeting at the grand opening. We will work to make sure that we get people of all ages involved. Please send any suggestions or let me know any area you are interested in helping out with.

We have not heard yet about the tax exempt status of the Phi Sigma Scholarship Association but have talked with IRS and hope to have a decision in the next month or so. IF we get IRS approval any donations made this year will qualify as tax deductible. We will need the donations with or without the tax exempt status so people may as well make the decision now to help out and find out later if you can deduct it or not. We will send out a mailing to all alumni as soon as we here from the IRS.

In the mean time we need you to make contact with the people in your assigned year or just brothers from your time frame. Use the Grand opening as a reason to call them and tell them to save the dates and more information will be coming. Tell the house is complete. Get their e-mail address. We only have 300+ email address for 1,400 men. If you can get an e-mail address it will help a great deal to get people involved. Tell them to check out the web site at www.phisigs.org. If you get an answering machine leave the grand opening dates and ask them to send their e-mail address to you. You could also send a hand written note with the info and a copy of the pledge form that you can get from the web page or send a form letter and add a personal note to it. Remember the guys you are contacting are brothers you went to school with. It is much more effective to have you contact them than someone that went to school 20 years before or after them. Your ability to get a few e-mails and talk to a few brothers and ask for their support is key to our success.

Remember: EVERYONE is welcome to the grand opening regardless if they have supported us financially. They are supporting us by being there.

More later. Thank you for any help you can give us. Call me at 402-871-3903 if you have any questions.

Bill Mackintosh

Gentlemen:

We need someone to step up and be President of the Phi Sigma Scholarship Assn. Being President would not take a great deal of time. We need to develop a Scholarship application, which can just be created from a few samples from other organizations; and establish a few procedures, like scholarship application approval and transfer of funds to the scholarship recipients. And then on an on going basis make sure the scholarships are awarded and funds transferred. You could even talk to a brother and sign up as a President/VP take team if that would be more fun. Mr. Burnsides, Mr. Tobin, and I are currently on the board as it was created when we set up the corp. Please e-mail me back if you are interested as we need to get someone taking care of these details!!

Thank you for your support. Any questions you may also call me at 402-871-3903

Phi Sig Update

Gentlemen, Here is the latest information from 940 College Avenue:

  • The Phi Sigs are IN the house. Yes it is true. On Feb. 28th the men of Phi Sigma Epsilon/Kappa returned to their home. The house LOOKS OUTSTANDING and you should try to stop by and see it.
  • The Grand Opening Celebration dates have been set and will be on the 6th and 7th of September 2001. Details will be coming out to you soon. But the key things you need to know are phone numbers to a couple of hotels.
    • The University Inn and Suites: 660-562-3111
    • Comfort Inn: 660-562-2002
Call now and reserve your room for both Friday and Saturday nights. This will be a great time with golf on Friday afternoon, open house Saturday, football game against UNO on Saturday afternoon and the big celebration party at the NWMSU alumni house on Saturday night. You will be able to see brothers that you may not have seen for many, many years. Call your brothers and tell them that you want to see them there!!!!!!!!
  • Always keep and eye on the web site at www.phisigs.org. Pictures of the house are on the site as well as addresses of alumni. Check your address book to see if you have any addresses that we do not have. Update any information you have about yourself or brothers right on the web site. We are missing valid addresses for many men and we need to make them aware of what is going on at 940 College Avenue. We could really use more e-mail addresses of brother to keep them posted on events and activities.
  • The house may be done but we still need to raise more money. 103 men have stepped up for just over $200,000 of donations/pledges. We need to raise $450,000. The house cost a little over $700,000 and is worth about a half a million more than that. We got a hell of a value because Mark Burnsides spent the last 18 months of his life working on our house for FREE. We need your support. Everything we did as Phi Sigs took a team effort. Not one guy built a float or House decoration. A team effort. You can help by calling the guys you went to school with and telling them that you are in on this project and they should be too. Encourage them to come to the Grand Opening. We want all alumni to be there, if you have given financial support or not. This house has been built in your honor and you can contribute to the success of the house by your presence. If all of you support the house and call two brothers, we are home free. Do it now so they can get a hotel room reserved! Two years ago we had a condemned house on 940 College Avenue. Today we have a new house to honor the memory of all Phi Sigs and continue the tradition into the future!!!! Let's finish this and raise the money we need this year!!!!!!!

Thank you for your Support!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The House committee

10/04/2001 From Dave Stark (Active)

Dear Alumni,

We have sent to you a letter regarding a new PHI SIG DIRECTORY. In 1991 a directory was created containing pictures, addresses and memories of many alumni. By the end of this semester we wish to have created a 2001 directory and there is no reason why it can't contain a thousand names or more.

Our goal is to make a more comprehensive book. Our original due date was September 28th but anything within the first couple of weeks of October will be fine. We really need more people to buy a directory to make this thing happen. The postage is paid on the return envelope so PLEASE SEND BACK YOUR INFORMATION EVEN IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BUY ONE. If you have any questions or suggestions please contact David Stark at (660) 582-8763 or e-mail at    Thank you.

10/02/2001 From Bill Mackintosh

Greetings Gentlemen:

Here is the latest news from 940 College Avenue:
The house is looking great! Check out all the pictures at the new web site at www.phisigs.org The brick is done and the drywall is going up! While you are at the web site please make sure your data is current and add any information about brothers.

We will soon add a Bulletin Board feature to the web page. You can use it to facilitate communications among the alumni. For example: Does anyone know where Jeff Weaver is? He would have graduated in a 1975 time frame and has not been heard from for 25 years. Please   with any information about Jeff.

Kirk Mathews is being inducted into the Bearcat Hall of Fame the weekend of October 19th and 20th. Kirk pledged Phi Sig in the spring of 1976, and was a four year starter and quarterback. He was co-captain, offensive player of the year, MVP, MIAA first team, and AP all American Honorable Mention his senior season. There is a dinner on the 19th at 6pm and he will be recognized at halftime on the 20th. This also the type of item that we can post on the message board in the future so that brothers know what is going on.

We have raised over $180,000 dollars for the new house. And this is just from 81 men. We have over 1400 brothers out there. I know many of you are giving serious thought to supporting the house and your brothers. Now is a good time to sign up. If you do not have the pledge form, one can be downloaded from the web site. If we just get a few hundred men to support the house we will be in good shape. Please do what you can to help. I am including a list of brothers that have contributed and the level that they have given at, to help inspire you:

The description of the levels of giving are on your pledge form. While you have the form out, please consider filling it out and sending it in. The classification of Benefactor is not listed on the pledge form and is the name for individuals making a contribution less than $900. ALL LEVELS OF GIVING ARE NEEDED and will be recognized on the Alumni Wall of fame in the entry of the new house.

There are many ways to help: We need your financial support, but we also need your time. Use the address book on the web page to look up some brothers that you may not have talked to for a while. Call them and encourage their support. Help find accurate data base information so we can keep everyone informed. We need everyone's e-mail address. Talk to some brothers, get the e-mail address and then update it on the web site.

Hope to see many of you at homecoming on October 20th. We will have an alumni meeting at the house immediately following the parade. This is you chance to give input and suggestion, as well as see some brothers. We will discuss, and set, the date for the house grand opening party at this meeting.

We are moving forward and appreciate you continued support!

The House committee

A note from Bill Mackintosh

There are several important items to make you aware of:

--We are planing a Grand Opening of the house for Alumni for the fall of 2002.   The house will open late in 2001 but we thought the best time to have a Grand opening would be on a weekend when the Bearcats were playing football.  We will set the date soon.   This will be the biggest Phi Sig reunion ever and you will want to be there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phi Sigs that graduated from 1938 to 2001 are stepping up and making donations to help pay for the house.
We need everyone's help to make this work.  We need you to make a pledge.  We need you to call brothers and tell a few jokes and encourage them to make a pledge.  We need you to look at the web site and see if you have addresses, phone numbers, or e-mails for men that we have lost contact with.  Your participation will make the difference in this project.

The next update will have the dates for the Grand Opening/Phi Sig reunion.   Start getting pumped because you will want to be there!!
